Kaspersky Anti-Virus Version 6.0

Product Review

Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 is a refreshing product that updates at hourly and does not hog system resources. Kaspersky products have earned a well-deserved reputation for being the fastest vendor to post a new signature for identifying new malware. Kaspersky Anti-virus provides protection from viruses, Trojans root-kits, spyware, adware, dialers and potentially dangerous programs. Usually Kaspersky is first to develop virus signatures and dis-infection capability.

After running a complete scan I had sixty potential problems that needed attention. Two WMV movie files I had never opened contained Trojan download programs. Other potential problems were saved files that are considered hacker programs. These programs considered to be hacker programs by Kaspersky are system tools for computer administrators. The reporting function detects malicious URLs and files. Applications defined as Adware and Spyware are also included in the threat report.

The Proactive Defense component monitors changes to the registry, macro execution and opening new processes (example your browser). This Proactive Defense contains a heuristic analysis that can detect malicious activity that has not been previously identified. There is a built-in restore function to roll back the registry and file system to a state before malicious activity. The system requirements include support for 98 SE, ME, NT Workstation 4.0, 2000, and XP.  Kaspersky may be purchased from their Internet Store http://usa.kaspersky.com/store/.

Please note that Kaspersky is providing NTPCUG members with a 20% discount on all consumer products through 12-31-06. As of 1-1-07, the discount will be 10%.

I mentioned the anti-virus scans are unnoticeable. Kaspersky Anti-Virus remembers previously scanned files and does not re-scan unless the file has changed. Also, the virus scanning will pause if you are using applications that require system resources. Updates are performed in the background. No annoying messages the update was performed or not performed.

Kaspersky customer support has a fast turnaround for questions and problems. There are instructions for creating and using a BART PE rescue disk. When using the BART PE disk, program Help, chm, Internet files or links are not available. Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6.0 will also function from a command prompt. The Kaspersky Anti-virus program is a quality program and service for the computer user.
